The UNB Varsity Reds Hockey Development Program continues to grow to new heights as it had another spectacular day at the 2007 QMJHL draft held in Drummondville, Quebec. No less than 26 former participants of the UNB program were selected in the annual affair surpassing the 15 players who were chosen last year in Charlottetown, PEI . The V Reds program was established in 2002-03 and in just five short years has established itself as the top development program in Atlantic Canada for elite level hockey players.

This spring, ten AAA elite teams (1990-1999) are currently in operation, participating in various top level tournaments throughout Eastern Canada and the USA. This includes two 1990-91 squads who competed at the recent Warrior Meltdown (Mission Cup) in Montreal . In addition to the competitive teams, the Prospects program in conjunction with the UNB Hockey Program operate three Advanced camps from Atom to Midget along with the very popular Crimson Major Junior- Pro camp . The Crimson Camp has become the hi-lite of the UNB elite development program and includes top notch Pro, University and Major Junior prospects. 2007 V-Reds Player and National Champion Josh Hepditch participated for the past two years while recent UNB 2007 recruit Ryan Seymour is also a former Advanced Camp grad and Crimson participant.

Local Fredericton product Cameron Critchlow hi-lited the selection process as he was selected in the 1st round # 14 overall by the Bathurst Titan .A former participant of both UNB ‘Intermediate and Senior Advanced Camps and a 91 V-Red Prospect. Critchlow spent this year with the Notre Dame AAA Argos and was a 4th round rating going into the draft. However a strong performance with the V Reds Prospects at the recent Montreal tournament elevated his status considerably to be drafted among the elite in the QMJHL. Ten other team-mates from this recent 90-91 team were also picked at the draft. Cam will be in attendance at both UNB’s Senior Advanced and Crimson Major Junior camps this upcoming summer. Other top two round picks included Mike Kirkpatrick – Saint John Sea Dogs # 22 and former 91 Vred Prospect Devin MacAusland at # 35 by Moncton Wildcats. Last year four former V-Reds were selected in top 2 rounds including 1st rounders: Patrice Cormier #5 Rimouski and Mark Barberio # 14 Cape Breton along with 2nd rounders Mike Ward # 22 Lewiston and Taylor Mac Dougall # 25 St. John’s.
